It means that if you don't expect something you won't be disappointed. Also don't believe anything until it actually materializes. Sure you can still trust them but just be aware that there are conflicting circumstances that can and will forgo the most well intent promises. If these same people keep breaking their promises than it's certain that you can't trust them anymore. Then you won't set yourself up for any more future disappointments.

Of course you would, unconditionally, forgive them in your heart. They or your friends. Weren't we forgiven ? If you hold a grudge and harbor this resentment, it will break up your friendship , show a side of you that you don't want, and it will hurt you more then anyone. It never pays. The Devil wants you to be angry.
Are you talking about a Christmas gift ? Your actions would sure spoil the point of Christmas. You may never know why their plan changed but apparently it did.
Now put it behind you, it's done, forgive and move on and have a Wonderful New Year. That's what you really want, isn't it ???

It depends on the situation and exactly what they promised you. I would give them a chance to explain what happened before I jumped to conclusions.

I will feel sad and down becos she has broke that promise. But if she apologised and realised her mistake, I will trust her again. Provided that she does not repeat it again becos if it does, I will never believe her again.. its tough and its hurtful...

i will ignore them for a while.
it depends to my mood to trsut them or not, but i think 90% for not trusting them again. once they do it, there is high possibility that they will do it again.
