You can format it, and then on the back you will see little switches. Switch it to Slave instead of Master.

If you mean to clear all previous contents of the HD, then you need to make new partitions. Once you have deleted your old partitions, all data will be lost.
You can do this by using a bootable cd for windows.
For your second question, each hard drive can be either a master or slave. To change the settings, take out the hard drive and on one side you will see a jumper. are plastic plugs with metal sleeves that form a circuit between a pair of pins. Right abobe to where it is inserted you will see the details for all the pins. To make the hard drive a slave insert the jumper where the pins are labled as slave. Put the hard disk back in.

If this is your main drive, don't do anything until you have a new master hard drive installed and a new operating system up and going. Then remove the old drive, get the new master drive functioning, re-install the old drive into the case after setting the jumper to the slave position. Plug everything in, let the drivers load for the new slave hard drive, if WinXP, right tic on "My Computer">select Manage>select Disk Management>right tic on the new SLAVE hard drive letter>select Format>after the format is complete, the new slave will be ready for use.

If you want to cleanup the drive you can format it. If data on your hard disk is corrupted it is advisable to format the hard disk and reinstall the operating system (usually Windows XP). If a new hard disk is used, you may prefer to partition the hard disk into 2 or more drive. The operating system is installed on the first drive and a backup of the data is stored on the second drive More details at http://fixit.in/format.html

if the jumper on the back has a cable select position, use that instead of slave or master. you can set it in BIOS from there.
