Webster's dictionary says a liberal is one that can see more than one side of an argument or position. By that definition, I am a liberal. Politically, a liberal is one that believes the government should spend more taxes on welfare programs. Taxes are the governments money. A conservative believes that taxes are their money which the government has taken from them and there is a greater need to spend wisely rather than spend it all and take more.

A liberal or conservative is defined by the system they are compared to. A conservative either likes the system or likes what has been tried before, while a liberal wants change. Or, when "judgment" is the system being examined, a conservative plays it safe while a liberal makes drastic steps. So it really depends what you are comparing it to.
For instance John Winthrop was a liberal Christian in England, but in America was a conservative when compared to the Quakers.

My crazy uncle is a liberal, so I should know (I think those two properties are coincidental, but the matter is up for debate). A liberal is someone who thinks the Government and its laws are too restrictive, and that more freedom (or liberty) should be given to the people. For the record, I am not a liberal myself.

Symptoms of liberalism:
-An irrational desire to disregard democratic principles such as freedom of speech and on, you know, liberty?
-Socialism (the Communists are liberals you know).
-Liberals hate liberty. Socialists hate socialism. Capitalists hate capitalism. Bender the robot loves logical paradoxes and set theory. Nihilists don't care one way or the other. Anarchists hate governments.
-Kitten huffing.
-Pretending to be British (i.e. homosexuals).
-Having more then 20 gigs of porn on your hard drive. (10 gigs if your into Beast or bdsm)
-Pretending to be Canadian (since they're even more liberal than the fags in England).
-The need to tell all bible-huggers that they are wrong.
-Have a tendency not to support war, or the killing of innocent people (unless those innocent people are fertilized eggs or the mobile little fellows that make up love juice.)
-Like to think they are friends of black people, despite the fact they founded the KKK.
-Eternal feelings of disappointment on the morning of the "first Wednesday after the first Monday in November every two years" (excluding the years 1992, 1996 and 20006 of course)
-Lying while under oath. (Republicans, like George Bush don't have to answer questions while under oath.)
-Driving a Prius
-Owning an iPod.
-Carrying a flash memory drive with a capacity of at least 1 GB at all times.
-Try to legalize illicit drugs in order to cut down on the corruption by law enforcement that takes bribes from drug dealers to leave them alone, which is supported by conservatives that set up the anti-drug and enforcement laws that way via kickbacks.
-Try to legalize gay marriage to win the votes of homosexuals and tick off the conservatives.
-Support terrorists and call them freedom fighters, and also dedicate Space Shuttle Columbia journeys to their fight against the imperial invaders (1982, Ronald Reagan, Afghan Mujahideen “freedom fighters”fighting against the communist invasion of Afghanistan in the 1980s), while at the same time calling the US and UK government the real terrorists. Also claim that most terrorist acts are false flag operations lead by governments to trick their people into war with middle-eastern nations over oil rights.

liberals are people who believe in change, they typically prefer larger government and strict regulation. They believe in breaking down values long held by society and removal of institutions which preach conservative values.
personally I believe liberals like conservatives are silly. no one side has the answers.

A liberal is someone that allows anything to go. They are for liberty.
live and let live is their motto
but it is best for everyone to be in between.
Like anything in life too much of anything is a bad thing.
