Buses are good only if it 400 to 500 Kms distance. Considering Indian road and the facilities buses provide is far from comparision with Train.

Travelling by bus is economical and fast to travel.
It is quite all right to travel in buses. If you mean city-to-city bus, there are lots of luxury buses which are quite comfortable to travel.
If you mean taking buses to travel within a city, take following precautions:
- Beware of pickpockets.
- Note where the passengers get on in the bus. There is separate entry and exit for the passengers.
- Request the conductor to remind you where and when to get off. (I often do that when I travel to a new city).
- Buses in some cities does not have route direction written in English. Ask several travellers where the bus goes before getting on the bus
- In some parts of India, women are seated separately from men.

Yes, you can but only if you can bear the overcrowded buses. But, if you want cheap ride prefer buses as other vehecile's drivers ask for a large sum of money. But , personaly i feel you should take an auto or taxi for a comfortable ride by paying a LITTLE more money .
