A dread lock serves many different pruposes, in the Rastafarian culture, dread locks are the essential look, untamed hair that is allowed to grow freely.

Many people sport dread locks simply for style, like Whoopi Goldberg, and a lot of the skater kids you see now a days.

It is aa style hat requires very little maintenance, you just have to wash it, and ever now and then use wax to lock the dreeads tighter or get in loose strands of hair.

Alot of people find that if you sport long dreads, people assume that you are "dirty" and that finding employment is hard, because they will often ask you to cut your hair.

if your interested you can go to a salon and get your dreaded as a style that you can undo a few weeks later. You can also do it at home. By a jar of wax, Australian bee wax, is cheap, and smells yummy. part your hair into two inch, or bigger if you like boxes, use a clump of wax and grab the hair at the root and twist it clock wise slowly working your way to the end of your hair..

Good luck.!

**if someone actually gave you one, maybe they are symbolizing your closeness to their spirituality, locks are revered depending on the person...it's also a bit creepy.;

Rasta's generally have dreadlocks as part of their faith but now it is widely sported by many. When Rasta's were first in Jamaica they were outed by many communities because they sported this hairstyle. People like Bob Marley, Lauryn Hill and Mick Hucknell (his fell out as he did not look after them) have them. They can grow to a long length once they are maintained well. They are lovely and not a clump of mess as someone else described!

Ahhh..that's what you're we're asking earlier. I can't pretend to know what that means but for anyone to cut off a piece of hair and give it to someone, in my eyes, would be an offering of friendship, kind of like becoming blood brothers.
