I don't recall exactly how he was written out of the show, but I know his fate was left uncertain in the event Pernell decided to return. Pernell was concerned that the show was becoming racist, sexist, and violent; and when his contract was due for renewal, Pernell refused to sign it.

I believe the way he was written out was that Adam went to sea to be a sailor, but I'm not for certain. In real life he was having disagreements with the writers of Bonanza.

I think he was elected to Congress or the Senate and went to Washington D.C. But it has been a very long time since I have watched any episodes of Bonanza, and I could be very wrong about that.
