Hi, i've played acoustic the last 5 years and have had an awakening to pick up an electric.

Personally I am after a nice les paul type sound with a bit of edge and nice sustain, close as I can get to gary moore "still got the blues" for under $500.

Heres the brands I've come up against.

Prs Se series
Hamer(new models any good these days?)
Michael Kelly
Godin LG

Any suggestions? Im looking at new store brought stuff unless I come across something local.

I am a Les Paul man myself. If you can hold out and save some more money you can get a genuine Gibson Les Paul Studio for under $1000, but if not you can still get an Epiphone Les Paul Standard for less than $400. I have played both and personally like the genuine Gibson Les Paul, but the Epiphone isn't that bad either. You might want to upgrade the pickups and the tuning machines if you get the Epiphone though. The machines are kind of lame and don't stay in tune as well as Genuine Gibson and sometimes the worm gear strips. If you didn't already know, Epiphone is a subsidiary of Gibson.

Play them.
Les Paul have remarkable low action besides the distinct tonal qualities you describe.
Even if I were purchasing a Les Paul I would want to play several before making my selection. There is a difference even on the top end guitars. At the low end the variance is even greater. Play several, maybe you'll luck out and get a real cherry imitation. One that has a couple extra wraps on the coils, a little straighter neck, and a lot better action than typical in your price range.
If your after sustain go for a heavier wood like ash. Four bolt or through neck design.
What am I saying, keep saving and maybe you can pick up used one for around a grand. You'll never be satisfied until you have what you really want, a Gibson.

Only a Les Paul sounds like a Les Paul......sorry. I agree with the other person, if you can't save up for a Standard or Classic, buy a studio Paul. You can find them for around $1000 or less if you shop around. Better investment too!

You can buy the Epiphone Special II Model

Special II has a pretty good original LP sound for 300 dollars or so

If that isnt for you..

I suggest picking up a second hand or discounted Epiphone LP Custom for about 600 or so....RRP $1000

i used to have an epiphone les paul special II and i hated it. right now im playing an ibanez artcore. its a hollowbody, and not everyone is into those. but for $300-400 its got a great sound for blues, jazz, or rock.
