I've loaded and run System mechanic 6 full version which has cleared a number of registry faults, but it still takes over 2 minutes for the pc to open up the windows page. Its only a year old and was working fine up until 6 days ago, when it froze completely.

It is not necessary that the problem comes only from the registry. You are having a slow system startup. Here are some guidelines and information to clear the problem.

• You have viruses that are running on the computer.
• You do not have sufficient free space on the hard disk.
• You do not have sufficient random access memory (RAM) installed on the computer.
• You have corrupted or outdated drivers.
• You have too many files in the Recycle Bin or temporary folders.

RESOLUTION

Run a current virus scanning program on the computer
Remove unused programs, increase the size of the hard disk, or remove programs from the hard disk so that you can install the programs on another hard disk
Upgrade the RAM

Examine Device Manager for old drivers and update them
Drivers can become outdated and possibly damaged to the point where they slow the system performance. To examine Device Manager for old drivers, follow these steps: 1. Click Start, click Run, type the sysdm.cpl in the Open box, and then click OK.
2. Click the Hardware tab, and then click Device Manager.
3. Right-click the device, and then click Properties.
4. Click the Driver tab.
5. Compare the driver version on the Driver tab with the version information about the latest version of the driver that is released on the manufacturer's Web site.
To resolve the problems that are caused by corrupted or outdated drivers, install the latest drivers

Run the Disk Cleanup tool
To start the Disk Cleanup tool, click Start, click run, type cleanmgr.exe in the Open box, and then click OK.

I would also check the logs in the event veiwer.

goto start -> run then type eventvwr then hit enter.

Brows around in there for big red X icons and look at what the fault was. This may give you a clue to the device or software that is causing the system to hang.

Do this. . .make sure you clear out all the history, and temp internet files, etc. . .. . Then do this:

Start, Run, type in "prefetch"

and hit enter. . .. . delete all those files. . . . . .Also, you can do this: Start, Run, and type in "msconfig". . . . you can disable any startup programs you don't want running when booting your computer. Be careful not to disable System Files and programs...When you in msconfig, the best way to do it, is click on the "Services" tab. . . . that way, the list shows you what exactly the program is.

RAM!... you may need more ram,,,

check your list of programs that launch on startup,,, the more programs the slower the load.

I would suggest also you reload windows xp (i hope you are using xp, if not upgrade dude)

also ensure you have a couple hundred meg space on your hard drive.

also upgrade your security tools at www.download.com
