There is something called a "poor man's copyright". Musicians do it all the time.

Write your idea or summary of your story and put it in an envelope. Send it to yourself but don't open it. Keep it sealed. If someone uses your idea after the postmarked date on the letter, you have proof that it was your idea first.

Just a suggestion.

Yet you can still copyright the story. Sorry, but I think you can't safeguard it - unless you copyright it before anyone elce dose (Don't worry, I copyright anything that might be harmfull if others use it!)

The only way to do it is to record your idea in a way that's date stamped, so that if anyone else uses it you can prove it was 'your idea'.

The usual way to do it is to write it down and send it to yourself via recorded delivery (don't open the letter when it arrives!).

Do remember that if someone 'steals' your idea there's realistically nothing you can do about it. You would have to prove in court they knew the minutae of your idea and copied it word for word. Being influenced by, or having the same idea, is not a crime - even when to all sensible eyes plagerism has taken place.

Write the story. Write it well. If someone else writes a good story using the same idea, rejoice, because then there will be two more good stories in the world.

You can claim 'intellectual copyright' of the idea. But if you don't want others to copy it don't tell people until it's ready to be published.

You could store it i your computer and protect it with passwords, write it down on pieces of paper and not let anyone see it or store it inside a diskete, disk or thumb drive and keep it with you at all times.

Write down your idea. You can claim copy right of the "synopsis". Later you can expand it.
