An adversary of adequate potency would bring the world together, yes. This has been dramatized repeatedly in books and movies like Independence Day, etc. It would have to be powerful enough to threaten all existence so that everyone would forget everything except survival.

Maybe, but as soon as the event is over or dealt with, we'd be back to fighting one another for what's left of the planet.
