I haven't had my baby yet, but from all the reading, watching of documentaries and clinic appointments I've been to so far, I believe they do not use this method anymore as it is classified as child abuse.

They will use the apgar method which involves looking at the baby's colour, movement, noise etc. and make a decision from there. If the baby does not seem to be breathing he/she will be placed on oxygen right away.

No one does that!

Hang in there. If anything, the whole process does hit the new parents pretty hard - my godchild's father couldn't describe it (mainly because he "almost" passed out and had to be caught before he fell & hit his head on a radiator) - but he said he's been walking on air for the last three days, it's an incredible experience.

There's a Lot of waiting around first, and he thought it was all a fluke & nothing would happen. Then it did, and he was so amazed that it was beyond describing. He still can't tell us, but it sounds like something his new daughter will always appreciate. He feels sorry for us all because we've only seen a dolphin swim. Apparently this is more incredible. And you hopefully won't need any stitches ; )

I'll just bet everyone is going to say "who's your Daddy?"

I think it is to initiate the anal compulsive disorder and therefore make them better tax payers.

It is called old fashioned.

They don't do that any more, not in the US at least.
