As a computer technician, I work on computers all-day long so I know which ones are bad. I service both Mac (Apple) and PC laptops.
To be honest, if you're interested in a Windows-based laptop I would look at Toshiba's line of notebooks. They are excellent quality and I own one myself and have nothing bad to say about it.
On the other hand, from a professional stand-point I favor Apple's MacBook line. They offer the speed and reliabilty you need without the clutter of Windows. Also they are tremendously less prone to security vunerabilities and to this day, there has yet to be a serious virus found to infect Mac OS X.
My personal recommendation to you is that you do some research, take a look at the Toshiba Satellite and the Apple MacBook lines and weigh your wants and needs.

Depending on your buying power, I will suggest Sony Vaio or Apple Mac Book.
You can check prices at www.pricegrabber.com
While buying any laptop please consider these :
*Intel Core 2 Duo processor (Not CORE DUO, CORE 2 DUO)
*If you thinking of upgrading to Vista, at least 1GB of RAM
*On-Monitor camera
*Warranty
*Try it at least for couple of hours before taking it home for usability.

I have been extremely happy with my Toshiba, and acceptably happy with my Sony Vaio. That's what help I can offer.

Well it depends on what you're going to use it for, game, music, programming?
But I believe anything that has Intel is great no matter what.
