I have a long layover in Amsterdam and would like to visit the city and possibly bring back a glass pipe to the U.S. Would I get in trouble if I get inspected in customs ? What about as carry-on luggage ?

It all depends if the customs agent you deal with is being an a-s-s.

My boyfriend's sis tried to bring back a clean bong from here and got stopped by customs. They found the bong (a small one) and told her that either she could break it and not get fined or they'd have to confiscate it and she's face a court date and fines. She broke it but as it was stated earlier that gave them probable cause so they searched through the rest of her bags w/ a fine toothed comb. She arrived at 7:30pm and didn't leave the airport until almost 10pm.

So buy at your own risk. I suggest you get a small pipe and put it in w/ your checked bags. IF you get caught play dumb and break it if you must.

Amsterdam Glass Pipes

The glass pipe itself is legal, but if you get inspected, the pipe may signal that you are someone who needs a closer examination. Same thing happens to people who don't look right or have the wrong t-shirt or pin. Expect long inspections if a casual check reveals the pipe. As long as you have nothing else to hide, then you just need to allocate more time between connecting flights (expect hours of inspection). Be sure not to catch flights that connect / lay-over through countries that are very strick against the drug culture.

By now means use that pipe before you take off! Leave it untouched in the original package and tell them at custom it was a present. Nevertheless, with the new regulations you might draw alot of attention on yourself and might get searched. You can also buy glass pipes in the US.

You will be fine as long as you don't smoke anything in it. To be on the safe side, I would pack it in your checked baggage if possible. Otherwise, just make sure it is clearly visible so they don't think you are trying to hide anything, and buy one from a seed store instead of from a coffee house, so it smells clean.

Keep it in your suitcase (put it in a sock or something). As long as you didn't use the pipe yet and it has no trace of paraphenalia when you go through customs, you will not run into any problems.

As long as you pack it well so that it does not break, I dont think you will be in trouble for bringing it, as they are popular as decorative items as well.
