If you use outlook express you can go to tools, options and than click receipt at the top of the page you can click the first box. Before you friend reads you email they have to click a box which sends you an email telling your email had been seen.

if you don't receive an error message back from yahoo, something like daemon delivery, than the message was successfully sent.
however requesting a reading receipt i-m not sure it's possible with free yahoo accounts.
In order to request a reading receipt you could use a free POP3 account. Try here for that

if it was sent it should be recieved if not the e-mail postmaster would let u know they could not deliver it
