Here you'll find how many antivirus products manage in recognising new kind of viruses and how well they are doing at removing them.
The comparative test from november show that Avira is pretty much the best choice for a free antivirus software. It's followed by Avast and then by AVG.

Wonder why no ones is informing everyone of AVG. AVG IS NOT GOING TO BE PAID IN JANUARY. It looks like you didn't take the time to look at Grisoft's website, but if you did you'd see there is a new version of AVG, AVG 7.5. What you have is AVG 7.1. They are discontinuing the updates for 7.1 to get people to get 7.5. If you don't believe me, heres a quote from their site:

"GRISOFT is announcing a new version of the AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition. This new 7.5 version with improved performance and full compatibility with the latest Windows Vista version will be available very soon. Users that are using AVG Free 7.1 will be provided with a specific dialog, within the next few weeks, with the opportunity to choose the right option fulfilling their needs. AVG Free 7.1 version will be discontinued on 15th of Jan 2007."

Happy holidays!

for free antivirus, AVG is gain a lot popularity. but i have later search many website, and see many tests that indicated the free version of AVG is not so effective in detecting virus. there are two antivirus products, they are not free, but you can use it for one full year,( one year is not a short time, who knows what is gonna happen after a whole year, maybe many new antivirus are coming out!), one is Active Virus Shield, one is Ca eTrust antivirus 2007. I do the research, AVS is more popular, so i install it in my laptop, but i dont know why, it can't not update the definition. but here i am sure it is not AVS problem, because my another computer is using it and has no problem! so i can't use it in my laptop, then i goes to Ca eTrust, now about this product, not very popular, i didn't find too much real review,(there are, some say good, some say bad, as always). but i decided give it a try. after installation, and then it asks to scan my computer, then it scans, and then detect something, delete it, then reboot, that is it. and now i am using it. and at this point, i dont know how can i tell you how is this product, but it is definitely not bad, it didn't consume alot of resource, my laptop is not slow down ( some reviews said after install this, their pc slow down), so now you see, some thing works fine on yours machine, maybe it sucks on mine, vice versa . so you have to figure it out yourself.

I like AOL AntiVirusShield. Don't let the name AOL fool you. AntiVirusShield is made by Kaspersky which is one of top-rated anti-virus vendors in the world.

In recent tests, the most popular free anti-virus, AVG, was only able to detect about 82% of a very large sample of viruses. On the other hand, AntiVirusShield was able to detect better than 99% in the same test.

AntiVirusShield has excellent virus detection rates and is extremely light on using your computer resources. (6mb)

And it updates 15 to 20 times a day with new virus definitions, 7 days a week.

Free to anyone, AOL member or not from:

If your Internet connection is reliable enough and allows you, I warmly recommend you the regular use of Bit Defender On-line Scanner, on www.bitdefender.com.
Besides of coming from one of the top AV providers, it also does exactly the same job as the commercial version without the problems that might occur related to installation and compatibility with your already installed security software.
That is what I've been successfully using for a time now. Hope it helps!

most virus are spread through IE. IE is not a safe browser. you should use a more secure browser to protect your PC from virus.

i recommand you to use firefox with Google toolbar. firefox can block any any popup and disable any virus and adware, spyware on webpage, so, firefox is much safer than IE browser. as you know, most of virus spread throught internet and webpage.

besides, firefox is much smaller than IE, so it run faster than IE.

download firefox for free, Just have a try:
