as a team you get 2 points for a win in regulation, overtime and in the shootout. you receive 0 points if you lose in regulation and receive 1 point losing in overtime or in shootouts. if a team finishes the season with a record of 46 wins (would give you 92 pts) 27 loses ( would give you 0 pts) and 9 overtime loses which includes shootouts (you would get 9 points) so your total would be 101 points as a team.
players get only 1 point for a goal and 1 point for an assist so if a player has 40 goals and 40 assists then he will finish the season with 80 points.

Team points are acquired by winning. If a game is ended in regulation (not in overtime or a shootout) the winner gets 2 points and loser gets none. If the game goes into overtime, the losing team still gets 1 point. I'm not sure how individual points are scored.

Winning team gets 2 points...Losing team 0 points! If the teams are tied after regulation..goes to overtime! Winner in overtime gets 2 points, Loser 1 point! Same for Shoot-out(when no one wins in overtime) Winner gets 2 points, Loser gets 1 point! As far as individual points you are scored in Goals and Assists(passing to goal scorer)..1 for each!

The answer was given, but I just want to give my $0.02...The points system of ranking teams is antiquated and should be dropped.
It's misleading because the idiots that make the schedule have some teams playing as many as six more games than another.
It all comes out in the wash at the end, but it still sucks.

player gets a point for an assist or goal tema gets 2 points for winning and 1 point for going into ot even if they loose they get a point if they go to OT
