Why doesn't the Macbook have a place to plug a phone line in?

Well they didn't bundled it with the laptop because you are to buy the external modem from them which is optional. It's just another marketing startegy plus nowadays people use wireless or ethernet connection and it saves space for the MacBook without having to shell out space for another modem chip beacuse the Macbook isn't as big as the Pro. If they did place another modem chip then there's gonna be one feature to be taken out.

don't know why Apple hates modems, just grab an external for $20 and connect to the USB.
