If your sick use then if not do not:
I have seen over and over when downsizing happens the manager of a dept makes recommendations and includes the amount of time a person misses from work. Not alway fair - as some people are really sick, but other abuse the policy. When you are out other have to do your work for you.

It depends...
First, how many days? You want a few days back towards the ed of the year in case you really do catch the flu, etc.
It also depends on the company view. Does the peopl who don't call in sick get any other incentives, such as larger aises, leeway in work ,etc.
If there isn't any disadvantage, you aren't putting your employer or coworkers in a bind, and you have an out if you catch the bug in December, then I would have to agree it would be a good ideas to take a day here or there, particularly for things that are tough to schedule outside work (dentist, doctor appointment, etc.). Just be careful of what you do - you don't want someone saying they saw you walking at the park, at the gym, or shopping while you were sick - use it to do things like clean out attic/garage/apartment, the above appointments, out of town work, visit relative. etc.
As for ethics - it depends upon the company, but lets face it - few companies are giving raises and benefit increases that have kept pace with inflation, and if all the above is true, shame on the company for not giving added recognition to employees who never take sick days.

No, because sick days are to be technically taken ONLY when you are sick. Of course, a lot of people treat it like vacation days with the motto "if I don't get caught, it's OK".
Many companies have converted to PTO (Paid Time Off) and have combined the vacation/sick days into one category and have found that employees did not call in sick frivolously.
I worked for a company that converted from Vacation/Sick Time Off to PTO and the "usual suspects" who used their sick days as vacation days were all of a sudden in good health. One lady in our division was guaranteed to take a sick day or two within a week after the Sick Hours report came out and she knew how much she accrued. When it became PTO, she rarely called in sick.
Here's the question - if it is really OK, why do people have to fake their voices to sound sick when they make that phone call to say that they are not coming into work? I've received many of these phone calls that I can tell which are fake and just roll my eyes.

No! It's only stupid not to use them when you really are sick. People that don't take days off even if they are sick, usally have something to hide at work. As for those people who take sick days as if they were vacation days are the same kind of people that steal time to get more money on their pay check. But what comes around goes around and as for anyone who sleeps on job, takes longer lunches or leaves work early and has someone punch out their card for them, log out for them on computer time clock, or even lie on hand writen time cards (even if it only 1 to 5 minutes, times anyone of those by 200 days or less) and know matter how you look at it the fact still remains the same: "YOU ARE A THIEF!" PETTY CRIME TO YOU OR NOT, A CRIME IS A CRIME. REMEMBER; "PEOPLE THAT LIVE IN GLASS HOUSES SHOULDN'T THROW ROCKS" OR DO YOU PREFER "HE WITHOUT SIN, CAST THE FIRST STONE!" So keep on doing what you're doing and stay in the same dead in position or do the right the thing and good things will come your way.

It is, Why don't you people organize your self and talk to human resources so they can pay the hours above the by law 12 days? They can do this as an incentive to avoid absenteeism and both are parties are happy, the employees and the employer. If they don't want too sick days should be taken, is your right by law.

sure. you will be written up for something that's no longer on the muse of a risk-free discrimination classification or against corporation coverage or for refusing to do some thing unlawful. None of it is modern-day here, consequently you will be written up. it is no longer a courtroom of regulation, so "legal info" isn't mandatory.

No, you can save up your days and take months off of paid vacation. Also if you get sick you may not have any vacation days left and not get paid. Be smart about it.

I agree. The reason one works to to make money. If some reason you can make money without working, i.e. sick leave, it makes no sense not to take them.
The only exception to this is if one loves one job...which is rare.
