I'm not treated as an equal citizen here in Australia, so why should I as a 'non-citizen' be expected to pay my taxes to a government that refuses to acknowledge my love?

well see there is debate about taxes in america as there is no written law saying you have to pay it. but people are too scared to fight the fact and the gov. wont give written proof of the tax act.

Speaking as a US citizen and a gay man; I think that no one should be exempt from paying federal taxes. Regardless of the reason.

My reasons for this are very simple - You derive benefit from your tax dollars:

1. Your national defense.
2. Your schooling was paid for by tax payer dollars.
3. Retirement.
4. In some parts of the world - student loans and financial aid.
5. Disaster relief and aid in the event of disaster.
6. The arts and other programs
7. Roads, bridges, airports and other infrastructure.
8. Most if not all "public" goods - transport, education, fire and
police and hospitals, etc

We all have an obligation to a society if we agree to live in it - by doing so we agree to abide by its rules and support it. Without society/government life would be "brutish and short"...Hobbes.

If we disagree with the way society is run than there are channels for protesting the way we are treated. We must use those channels to effect change.

You always have the best questions. Kudos man. I agree if we don't have rights as all tax paying citizens why should we pay any taxes. However not paying your taxes will land you in jail, so don't stand on that one. In america we have congress men or women in our area that we address those issues to to make them go up the ranks. Sending letters -mails and phone calls to them may help here in the states. I don't know anything about your government system in australia. Good luck with that one and let me know what you find out!

I don't know Australian law, but here in the USA there are other legalities which would prohibit someone from claiming that as a refusal to pay federal taxes.

As US citizens we all are required to pay federal taxes, everyone benefits in some small way from these taxes paid out, so every adult citizen is required to file and pay.

I agree with you in principle but is this really the most effective way to get the point across? Won't you just be sought as a tax dodger? I think you would be more effective taking the same energy and working on Marriage Equality campaign.
Have you contacted all your political reps and let them know your feelings? Have you worked on petition drives?
Go for it, tiger!

You shouldn't have to and if enough people in the GLBT community were to protest by not paying taxes then the governments of the nations that don't allow equal protections for the GLBT community in all regards would be forced to reexamine this issue. But unfortunately the GLBT community is unwilling to risk everything to fight for a cause. And that is about what it would take for instant change.Otherwise we have to appeal to the humanity of our society. And that takes a very long time.Just look how long it took for slavery to end.

When you are dealing with governments it takes time to change things. The best way to handle it is to be a model citizen and continue to support the new laws being voted in to effect.

Ghandi said "Be the change you want to see in the world."

that sounds fair to me. i mean if we are not equal and to the breeder facists in the government we are less of people because we are gay then i think we should be exempt from taxes. lets put that to a vote in congress and see what they say then.
