There's not really one brand that is best. Most pro artists have a mix of brands in their kit, as some items are better for one brand than the next. (This is a great link as for brands http://madenyc.com/SimplyTheBest.htm)
Here are some of my favorite brands:
Face Atelier, Make Up For Ever, NARS, Vincent Longo, Smashbox, Fresh, Too Faced, Ben Nye, Kryolan, Benefit, and Urban Decay.
Make Up For Ever has some fantastic foundations that will last no matter what you are doing. Remember to use a foundation primer (such as the foundation primer offered by Smashbox). Make Up For Ever also has some fantastic eyeshadows that are highly pigmented and are larger sized than some of the other brands (MAC, Lorac, Smashbox.) They have a great color range as well.
Speaking of Primers, you must get Urban Decay's Eyeshadow Primer Potion. This stuff rocks and should be used under any eyeshadow. It helps prevent creasing, as well as helps make the shadow last longer and stay vibrant.
Ben Nye and Kryolan are pro lines used for theatrical and film productions. The eyeshadow colors are very pigmented and they both have a great range. They are also fairly well priced too :)
Face Atelier is a newer pro line, but their products are fabulous. The foundation is silicon based and goes on like a dream. One great thing they offer is you can purchase sample sizes of their prodcuts so you can try them out before you get the full sized product.
NARS carries the BEST blushes and glosses. A company that names their colors "Orgasm" and "Deep Throat" definitely get my vote ;)
I'm a freelance makeup artist, so if you want a little more in depth feedback about which products you should look into, email me at liliummua @ gmail.com. Let me know what you are looking for specfically and I'll suggest some different options for you. And personally, I'd stay away from MAC. There's a boycott going on. (www.macboycott.com)
Also be wary of Bare Minerals if you are going to be photographed. Titanium Dioxide, a main ingredient in BM, reflects light thus will make you washed out in film. If you plan on being photographed or filmed, be sure your foundation does not have TD in it. (All the brands listed above do not have TD in their foundations.)
PS If you purchase from Sephora, you can take anything back that doesn't work. No questions asked.

For me it was trial and error. Some brands of mascara burn my eyes, so I use cover girl, it doesn't. I use liquid eye shadow because it seems to last longer than powder, it is just finding the right shades in it. Though I do have lots of powders too for the different colors. Avon has some good make-up that I can wear as well, I try to get them on sale which they have them all the time.

For a guy I would diffently try Bare Minerals, its a powder and
it won't clogg your pores. Liquids are to fake looking for a guys
skin. Also you can sleep in this makeup and it stays on. They
have a starter kit on QVC, u can find them online.

MAC for nearly everything,
Dior for their Backstage mascara
Lancome for their Juicy Tubes
Bourjois is also fab if you cant afford the more expensive stuff.
Laura Mercier Primer
The best thing for you to do is try and get testers of everything or get one of your girlies to bring her makeup bag round and have a rumage see, what you like best when it comes to textures etc and what colours you suit.
Make-up is fun and the best thing about it is experimenting!

Bare Escentuals. It's natural and won't damage/contaminate your skin if you forget to take it off. It IS pricey though.
