Terraced houses were first introduced to the UK after the Great Fire of London in 1666 when it was necessary to rebuild quickly and efficiently large numbers of homes, initially by developer Dr Nicholas Barbon.

The idea caught on from there and spread across the UK.

Very few London townhouses from prior to 1700 now still exist and the terraced house has since spread around the world.

Obviously, the reason the British now live in them is because they are already there. :-)

because these are what is left from victorian times when workers lived there to be close to their work. these were built by the factories they work for so they tried to fit as many houses in an area as possible so they could house more people hence the creation of the terrace. they are found exclusively in inner city areas as work was in the city centre and there was no cars/transport in victorian times.
