I am looking for an answer that has ingenuity. I am looking for one of those, "Ooh, where did it go" plans that will mystify those who encounter it.

Pure and simple. A distraction that is seemingly spontaneous will attract the attention of the viewer, as you or an accomplice remove the object in question. It is a common technique of pick pocketing teams.

You have to deflect the light. The only way you can see objects is due to the light bouncing off of the object and into your eye. So if you were to turn off the lights (1), OR coat it with material that deflect microwaves and restore it on the oppostie side of the object, as if the light just passed right trough.(2) (Like scientists in San Diego did with a copper cylinder, the object would be out of sight, or invisible. #1) Place it among other objects: hide a school book in the Library of Congress aamong millions of other books.
#2) The art of camouflage. Disguise the object to hide among those present. (An old friend of mine wrote a book called Hiding in Plain Sight about his Vietnam experiences as a SEAL.)

By experience if you concentrate on that one object and think about that one object only,, and think of what you want to do with the object it will dissaoear. Practice on small objects, and in quiet places til you get better.
