is it better to have seveal small bonds? or a few large ones?

If you are talking about the same total $ investment at the same interest rate, purchased at the same time, then smaller denomination bonds would enable cashing them at different times. This may avoid you taking a big hit with early redemption penalties as opposed if you were to cash one big one early.
On the other hand, several and few mean basically the same thing to me so if this is a trick question then I would rather have a "few large" rather than several small bonds.
