Where are you from?

Compliment the person on his/her shirt (or shoes, or glasses, etc.)

What do you do for a living?

Are you married or single?

Where did you go to school?

Where did you grow up?

It isn't easy. I would not use old tricks like complimenting someones clothing or something so obvious. I don't think I would necessarily ask what one does for a living, or anything that is none of my business.
Instead, depending on the circumstance, I attempt to come up with something original, or if not original, at least acknowledge it is a bad come on line. Example:
"I know you probably have heard this often enough, but couldn't help but notice..."
I can not think of anything more awkward than the first few lines of a conversation. For me, I actually have no set ideas, but no matter what I do wind up saying always attempt to include a bit of humour.
I hope these general ideas help.

It depends on the situation otherwise it sounds fake. For instance if you're on a train and the train has been stuck you can say - "typical, this train never gets in on time - are you a regular commuter?" to start a conversation.

It could be that the stranger is wearing something outrageous or peculiar and you could say something like "I've never seen a bag like that before - it's amazing, where did you get it?" or something.

The worst things you can do is the obvious chat up lines like "do you come here often". This is usually used by people from other countries who don't know better and it usually goes like this "hello preety lady, you lookin' nice, you come here often?" usually followed by a bad jumpered arm working its way round your shoulders. I usually just smile and say "sorry I have to go now" and bolt for the door.

The weather is always the best topic. Start by saying isn`t it cold/hot .... or if you`re waiting for a bus, it could be late, then you say have it looks like this bus has missed, what time is it i seem to have been waiting here for ages. Look around you and just start to talk about what you see.
