When Bob Knight wins his next game, it will be the crowning achievement on a 41-year career filled with them: five Final Four appearances, three national titles, an Olympic gold medal as the coach of the 1984 United States team and a spot in the Basketball Hall of Fame in 1991.

However, some worry that Knight’s coaching accomplishments have been overshadowed by his often profane and highly publicized tantrums, which include throwing a chair onto the court during a game against Purdue, a run in with a police officer in Puerto Rico, and especially his dismissal from Indiana in 2000 after 29 seasons in the wake of a confrontation with a student.

Will he be remembered more as a great basketball coach or a controversial/volatile coach?

It all depends where you're from and who you are. I am currently attending Texas Tech University and I believe he is more than a basketball coach. He has such a strong emphasis on making sure his athletes are well educated and actually doing their work in class. I see him as inspiring and a perfect role model for the athletes he works with. He deserves every bit of the reward he will soon receive and I will be there personally to see it happen!! Wreck 'Em Tech!!

He is one of the greatest coaches of any sport of all time. When asked, he tells people he's a teacher first, coach second. The guy may be in your face, violent, short tempered, but there is not a single person alive that can honestly say he doesn't care about his players and want to see them succeed in life. If they work out to be great pros, he's happy, but he would take great young men 100 times out of 100.

I wish there were more coaches/teachers like him because look at the total lack of discipline so many of these kids in the NBA have now who played for other programs. Coach Knight gets the most out of his players and wins games. That's the mark of a great coach. He makes great citizens. That's the mark of a great man.

Unfortunately, it will be both. However, if you look at his win/loss record, and with what players he achieved this with, you will realize you are looking at the best X and O, not to mention motivating coach, that has ever lived. Take a look at Dean Smith and Knights own protegee Coach K. They both have had unbelievably great players playing for them. Coach knight has only had 6 players selected in the first round of the NBA Draft, and only 1 player to ever make the NBA all-star game. Compare that to Smith who is in the 20's in both categories. Knight doesn't put up with the attitudes, and won't break NCAA rules to bring in the great players. He does more with less. If he could recruit players with the talent of coach K, he would be staring at 1200 wins right now.

Bobby Knight will always be looked at for his attitude. But he runs a clean program, and his student/athletes are actually students. I believe that he is the greatest coach of any sport that the world has ever seen.

He should be removed from the hall of fame and his records removed. He is a punk in a coachs outfit. Ask anywhere he has ever coached how much they paid out for settlements because of his temper. If he was not a winning coach he could be serving time for assult and a 3 time felon.

He has no business in any sport

Brilliantly controversial. The bottom line is winning and he's done that for over 30 years, regardless of how he makes it happen. There are enough loyalists to Knight to overshadow the crazy stories. At least he wasn't a racist like Adolph Rupp...

i admire his assertion yet I do think of he's somewhat boring as an analyst and seems too conscious that he's on television. in case you have observed, while he does his comments on ESPN he basically sort of seems on the digital camera in this bewildered way in the previous they decrease to Jay Bilas or somebody else. He says his piece and then it somewhat is totally almost as though he's uncertain what to do while he's complete. i want extra air of secrecy, character, and on-set temper suits from Knight. that would desire to make him extra helpful.
