Hi, there's actually a theory behind this whole story.
Based on medical reports tested and shown, if a person yawns in front of you, you'll also yawn in no time. Reason why? Due to lack of oxygen in the brain, a person will start to feel exhausted and yawn. So everytime when you yawn, you're in fact taking the air (which means oxygen is included) into your mouth, so that you can keep your brain functioning with certain amount of oxygen required in your body. Therefore, when you yawn in front of your friend, the air (oxygen) is taken in by you, the lack of insufficient amount of oxygen is retained in the air around your friend, thus the oxygen level in your friend's body goes low and makes him start to feel tired as well and in turn, he'll yawn too.
So don't get mistaken and say it is contagious, it is obviously not. Maybe verbally, you can say so but in reality, it is purely SCIENCE and I've learnt this great info from The Discovery Channel.

Yawning is not contagious because people around you are taking in more oxygen. The amount of oxygen used by a person yawning is insignificant and diffusion keeps the level of oxygen constant. The reason for the contagious yawn isn't fully known but it is theorized that it has an evolutionary significance in group empathy. When you see someone yawn, you literally feel what they are feeling. It could also have be to communicate tiredness before the rise of language.

the rationalization we yawn is using the fact our respiratory slows inflicting a loss of oxygen and so we yawn to take up a deep breath, it truly is why we yawn while we are drained-our respiratory slows down. And while we see somebody else yawn our respiratory slows down truly lower back so we yawn :)

Basically when a person is tired the brain requires more oxygen, due to this a person yawns to take in more amount of oxygen/air to fulfil the requent from his/her body.
thus causing a lower compression of air near you. Another person near you feels that he has a lower air compression, thus to adjust to his needs will yawn to take in more oxygen. thus yawning is contegious
