I think hip hop, as good as it is at times, is affecting American youth negatively. It's created this false reality for them - leading so many young people to believe that it's okay to mistreat women, that all life is about is doing drugs and flaunting ungodly amounts of money, like all people do that. The videos now, more and more are advocating criminal activity and portray it as if there is no consequence to it.

Hip hop can be used as a positive. And for the most part, if you're willing to look for it, it is positive. Unfortunately, that's not "entertaining" enough to recored execs. So the mainstream image of hip hop is negative.

I wish that some of these rappers who are in the spotlight and whom a lot of young people look up to...I wish they'd set a more positive example.

I think that it affects many African American youth because they tend to look up to the artists (especially if the father or mother is not active in the kid's life). This could be found on various levels from the use of the "N" word, what to look for in a mate, and keeping up with the latest fashions and become broke in the process..

It doesn't just affect black students but black people in general. Women are disrespected, violence is encouraged, and having a regular 9-5 job is looked down upon. Someone asked earlier if things would be better if hip hop did not exist and I would say yes to most of the crap that is put out nowadays.

I'm a little old school -but I used to like the time when music had lyrics. The stuff that they put out there now is DUMB. What's the point of the "chicken noodle soup" song? If you listen to it long enough, that stuff is catchy and it gets stuck in your head and that's all you can think about....just dumb stuff. And don't fool yourself in thinking only African-American students are affected by it, it's a dumbing down of American students too.

I suppose it is. Not negatively or anything, but a style of music can probably influence somebodies personality. I mean people who listen to country music aren't running around with shotgun's and riding trains all the time... People who listen to the blues aren't necessarily depressed. The point I am trying to make is, its not the specific Genre of music but the song in general. I'm sure their are hip hop songs that doesnt support rudeness to women and all that. Well thats just my take on it.

i think it is because many people see these quick rags to riches stories from these rappers and athletes and believe that it can come that easily for them as well without thinking it through completely so they dont work as hard in school. in the flip side, hip hop has also, i believe, sparked an interest in knowledge or current events and how history effects our lives.
