My daughter is going to be entering kindergarten next year. The diocese won't accept her at the Catholic school because she turns five 26 days after their age limit cut off. They will not bend on this. Do I put her in public school for a year and then transfer her in first grade? Will I create damage to her by making her change schools? Should I put her in a non-denominational Christian school> What's better in your experience?

As far as diversity we are in an area where she would go to a Catholic school that is 80% hispanic. We are Italian. We're in a small town so there are only a few african american and asian students at any school.

I dont think so Betty, children that age can adapt easily. The public school system has cut - off date also, check if they will accept her first. I am a public school teacher in Sacramento I believe our standards are very high but my sons went to private school because I want them to have a strong foundation in a religous setting. My 3 sons remained in private schools until middle school, once they became high school, I moved them to public schools. By then the foundation was set firmly. All my boys are thankful for this. My eldest son is now a teacher, middle son is accountant, and youngest is in business college all successful and very good citizens. They told me that having the private school foundations had helped them a lot and became the person they are because of it. Goodluck to you and your daughter's education

From my point of view, I recommend you to put your child on a private school.
I have the same problem that your child because I turn the age limit cut off because my birthday is on December 29, but my parents do not give up and finally I enter at a school.
But, lest talk now about the reason why I thing that a Private School is better that a public school. Just because a private school is more peaces full and has more discipline control that a public school.
I have the experience to study in a public school from Kinder garden to the Nine Grade. But, when I start the Ten Grade, I study on a Catholic Private school. And, I realize that the discipline and the place are much better that an public school because their was no fights and discus ions at recess.
Today I am at my first year at collage and I am great. So, I recommend you a Private School for your child. Its a great experience.

Kids adjust to change better than adults, she should not have a problem going to the Catholic school a year later. It's a personal choice if you want her to go to a non denominational school, what are your beliefs? Usually at that young age, they may only discuss the basic things about religion, which should not confuse your daughter if you transfer her to the Catholic school later on.

Public, cause in my opinion, you get more diversity and character, and you see it in people too. I'm assuming the Private school is mainly all whites. But in Public schools, there are mixed races she can learn from. Good luck!

I think thatyou should start out at a public school. If she doesn't like it, maybe you could change later because in public schools there is much more diversity and your daughter will be able to see views different than her own. When my child turns 5 I'm sending her to a public school because I want her to have her own opinions about things.I went to a private school one time and I hated it because I didn't like anything they wanted me to believe.
