"MAG" Wheels ORIGINALLY meant wheels made out of Magnesium, a light weight alloy, to reduce unsprung weight (weight not suspended by the suspension system) in order to help keep the tires in better contact with the ground over bumps. The heavier the wheel/tire combo, the less likely it will stay in contact with the ground when it hits a bump.
Magnesium is a highly flammable material (it is used in underwater flares) burns extremely hot, can not be extinguished with water, and can ignite by friction.
Now adays, "MAG" wheels mean any alloy (usually aluminum) cast and/or machined wheel.
The term is just a carry over from it's original usage.
