it's ironic, isn't it? recently, Tony Blair said that if immigrants didn't accept british ideas of tolerance they should be thrown out of the country. it was almost a spoof, i thought. how intolerant can you be in order to defend tolerance?

Being intolerant to anything, including intolerance goes against the idea of being tolerant. That's why.
The idea of tolerance is 'To each, their own.' The best way to be tolerant is to ignore intolerance with the understanding that it will likely always be there, regardless of what you want. Some people simply pathologically hate other people (for no good reason).

There are apparently degrees of all things including tolerance. Not everything is black and white, all or nothing.
