They spend most of their money on the offense. They don't have a lot left for good defensive players. Their defense is usually one of the worst so they have to outscore people. That's fine in the regular season, but a team that wins in the playoffs needs a good defense.

As long as Indy keeps putting all their money into their offense, they will continue to have great regular seasons, but then lose in the playoffs! You cant have that many superstars on one side of the ball without the other side lacking in talent! On top of that, they couldnt afford to keep Edge, so they are pretty much a one dimensional team on offense, and they dont play defense well at all. Peyton will eventually get an entire team around him, but thats not going to happen for another few years! Sadly, about the same time they decide to pony up some of their cash for defense, they will lose Marvin Harrison, who probably only has 3-4 years left in him at best!
Also, you have no right to say that you have "suffered" through a playoff losing streak, big deal!!! There are a lot of sports fans that would love to have even made the playoffs!!! I know it stinks to not win the big game, but if you think about it, only one team wins the superbowl each year, so in essence, every other team failed in their goal!

I too am a fan, so don't take this the wrong way, as i feel your pain. The Colts today are a finesse team. They play indoors, and have built a team that thrives indoors, focusing on the air attack and all that goes with it ($ on QB, WRs, and excellent pass blocking Gs, Ts, and TEs). The ground game as a result has suffered to an extent, the "big uglies" up front are not the best run blockers, and the backs are required to be just as good at picking up a blitz as they are at pounding the rock. Defense has long been a bugaboo in Indy, which is a big reason why Tony Dungy was brought in. But again, the franchisee has focused on finesse rather than smash mouth football. Speed seems to be the most important asset to Dungy, not tackling, not physical trench-warfare style D. This does alright for them at home, but look at how they struggle outdoors.
What they need to do (after Manning retires probably) is build an outdoor stadium and get back to basics. The Superbowl isn't coming to Indy, and the RCA dome isn't that great anyway.
To support my position, I merely ask you to look at previous NFL Champions. How many of them had finesse style approaches? How many of them played physical smash mouth football on both offense and defense? You have to go back to '99 and the Rams in my opinion to find a similar offense, and even there they didn't have all their salary ties up in the air attack. Elway in '97 & '98 was the most recent big money QB to win the superbowl, that was 8-9 years ago. In the era of the salary cap and free agency, it's the best TEAM that wins championships, not the best QB.

If Peyton didn't have such a fat contract, the Colts could spend some dough on some defense. He didn't need ALL that overbearing contract, considering he's all over television with commercials/endorsements. I'm not trying to criticize - it's not like he hasn't earned it, but I think it would've been helpful for the team if he took less money.

-finesse team, not built to take on a team that runs the ball 40 times
-not built to win a 17-14 game, built to win 38-21
-they want to let their talent and depth on offense show, so they want to be in shootouts, and playoff football rarely has shootouts
-they can't stop the run to save their lives
-they can't win a game based on their run game alone
as to the free agent thing, maybe you have never heard of the salary cap, but it limits how much a team can spend on players. they don't bring in a big-time free agent because they can't. if you spend 65% of your cap money on offense, you won't have much money for your defense. this is the result of having locked in manning, harrison, and wayne, no cap flexibility. this is why there is so much parity in football, no one team can spend 6 times what another team does (yankees and marlins respectively)

Because of the salary cap. They have to many high salaries on the team. Untill they cut some salaries they won't be able to spend money for front line fa's.

it is yet to be desperate. as quickly as a grand entire is reached, the money is divided between participants of the gang based on their magnitude to the season. team participants who had constrained enjoying time might get a smaller quantity. looks honest to me. additionally, in the back of the scene human beings additionally get a share, (small). this could be running shoes, clubhouse human beings, etc. i comprehend that for the time of baseball, even the batboy gets a sprint money.
