No one actually knows why people dream. Doctors have theories though. One theory that doctors have is: When you are at school, home, or somewhere, there are so many things that are going on that you don't think about during the day, night, etc. When you sleep, in other words dream, you think about all of the things that have happened. Also, during the day or night, if you are worried or upset, or feeling something about someone, something, etc., it all comes out. You think/ dream about it when asleep.

When people ask doctors and/or scientists," Does everyone dream?" Scientists and/or doctors say no. Some say that they are not sure. Some people don't dream. They can skip the 1st stage of sleep: REM (Rapid Eye Movement) sleep. Scientists and/or doctors don't really know why some people can do this. But they can.

It's thought that dreaming is a way for our brains to do some data processing and organizing and to give certain short term memory cells a rest...though our brain as a whole is actually MORE active while we are asleep.

All mammals dream and it's thought that all mammals experience dreams much as humans do.

An example of the effects of dreaming is that you tend to have a clearer perspective on things when you wake up in the morning. It's thought that we also dream to deal with things in our subconscious. While we are awake during the day our brains are constantly collecting information even though we may not acknowledge it. You may see something on TV that you give little thought, pick up on certain vibes from someone without realizing it, or walk by an object sitting on the table without taking the time to think about it. For example, if you saw a commercial on TV for soap, nodded hello to your boss, and walked by a new candle stick on the table, you might dream that your boss was upset with you because you took his soap and you have to give it back but somewhere in the dream the soap turns into a candle stick that you have to give back and suddenly people don't win trophies they win candle sticks...

But in the morning at least the real stuff makes sense.

As the other poster said, there may be some people who do not exhibit certain stages of dreaming. A lot of times this can be associated with some type of injury to the brain. There is a pair of conjoined twins, Reba aka Lori, and Dori Schappel, who are conjoined at the head and have the front portions of their brain conjoined (though maybe not actually wired into one another) as well. One of them claims to have never dreamed but no one particular "dream center" has been pinpointed in the brain.

A study was done in which participants were allowed to sleep but never allowed to enter REM. As a result the participants eventually started experiencing dreams while they were awake, or at least hallucinations.

It's their subconscious trying to tell them something. If you dream of a person you are dreaming about their qualities not necessarily about that particular person. Think about what is happening in your life and try to work out the answer you need.

dream is a vision of things stored in our subconcious mind , whatever we feel ,think, talk about is stored in our mind. any movies, talks etc is stored in the mind and we are sleeping our body is at rest and therefore our subconcious mind makes a "khichdi" of everything and we see it as a image.

Dreams - to entertain, to give them hope.
Nightmares - to instill fear and despair.
