The way I solve the cube is by layers. Others do it by solving the corners, then the middle of each side.
The basic terminology comes from labelling the sides front (F), back (B), left (L), right (R), up (U), down (D). Then you need to know to turn it clockwise or counterclockwise. Usually F just means turn the front face clockwise and F' means turn it counterclockwise. F² means turn it 180 degrees (or two turns either direction).
If you keep the cube always oriented in the same direction and follow the sequence, you will learn various moves. These can help you change a set of cubes, while leaving others untouched. They can also help you create patterns... for example R²L²F²B²U²D²

EASY. Go to www.rubiks.com.
From there you will click on Videos or video solutions, something like that. Then some guy with black hair and glasses (the same guy who taught Wil Smith) will talk you through it step by step. and he shows you how from your perspective.
i agree, those RU U D I sites are ridulous to newbies like us.
but i just got a cube for christmas and i was determined to learn it.
so, go there and follow the steps.
the best part???
you can pause the video. so, have a pencil and paper handy and do this:
first watch the step straight through (don't try and do it while you watch like i did, you'll get confused)
then, watch it again and write down the turns he says to make
ex- turn the right side 2 times
you can pause the video and even replay it if you miss a turn or if you get confused (like i did).
finally try out the step starting with step one.
keep it up. if you get messed up the first few times all the better because you'll just be practicing those firsst few important steps. and trust me, i practiced those a lot at first.
it took me a total of about 20 minutes to write it all down, watch it, and do it. and i was amazed i actually did it.
once you learn it and master the steps, you'll realize how easy it is. it's just a sequence of steps over and over. always the same ones, same order, every time.
so, now you can look like a smarty pants too.
(the advantage of the video is amazing... you actually see what you are supposed to do, rather than decoding R US F I junk.)

Well sorry to tell you, but there is no easy way to do it (some say it is real easy though).
I found this website and it makes some sense:
