Great question. It seems a round box would fit a pizza better, but I can think of four good reasons why we make square boxes.
1. Have you ever tried to make, or mass produce, a round box? It's much more costly. About the only people who make round boxes are the artsy/craftsy type.
2. Have you ever tried to store a round box? Square boxes fold up into convenient shapes, and easily stack when collapsed. Collapsing a round box means taking it apart.
3. How do you attach a lid to a round box, without it being a separate part? Square boxes allow you to fold them over and easily close them. Round boxes do not.
4. They've always just been that way. Nobody's bothered to make a round one, because the square ones were there first.
Maybe this could be your brand new restaurant idea! "Our pizza is served in round boxes!"--Just make sure you charge more for your pizza (to make up for the price of the expensive box), and that you have plenty of storage space behind the counter for your huge stacks. Also, try not to kick the boxes. They might rolll away. :O)

Simple really. The bottom line. It costs much more to make a round box than a square one. And the round pizza would pretty much have to be perfect everytime to fit properly into the box every time.... But hey, it's all about the bottom line....

i,m sorry but your question doesn,t show much thought on your part, have you been smoking something maybe....the reason for the square box is simply answered , as follows... 1st, square boxes are cheaper to make and to store, ship handle etc...so there is the economic aspect to remember, but as for your thinking that it would make the slices easier to grab from the box...how absurd is that, you need the open corner to get your stoned , fat fingers in there in the first place...scientists have debated this for many years and there is no better way to package pizza...so rest your mind on such things , before you hurt your self, or get busted for the clouds escaping your home, and worrying the folks next door ok...

I think of a couple of reasons:-
1. its easier to stack and store square boxes than round ones;
2. its probably easier to make square boxes than round ones;
3. it's easier to close the top of a square box than it would be for a round one.
Interesting question though...=)

people want to make their work easier; anyway, think for a moment how will you take out a pizza from a round container? there is no space in the corners;
in this way is simple for everyone.
i believe that your next question will be: "who (and why) invented the pretzel's hole?"
