I believe in science.
Science is something, right?
Some people don't need to believei in a creator in order to find meaning in their lives.

We don't believe in nothing. In fact, a lot of us follow similar moral principles to the average Christian or what have you. What we don't believe in is that there is categorically a higher power influencing everything in their lives. We need a bit more evidence for that.
I've said this in answer to other questions, but I'll repeat it here. I was brought up in a Christian family, and I do believe in certain things the Bible teaches (especially 'do unto others as you would have done unto you'). The reason I didn't hold with religion is because it's hypocritical to take the bits you want and not the ones you don't, and still call yourself a Christian (though an awful lot of people do it). Added to that, I distrust organised religion. Put enough people in a group, and someone will rise to the top and take advantage of those beneath. Take a look at the huge, expensive structures owned by the Catholic church and tell me those were gained rightfully.

Athiests are not necessarily immoral or indecent, as some religious types seem to assume. My boyfriend (an athiest) believes that when you do good, good will come back to you, and that just being a nice, moral person and respecting other people (and the world) is enough. He does not believe that a higher power created us and he believes that when you die, your existence absolutely ceases. There is no afterlife.
Its not a depressing way to live--in fact, it can be a very fulfilling way to live. If you thought that your actions would not, in the end, determine whether you go to heaven on hell, wouldn't you live more freely? Also, knowing that your life is all you have, wouldn't you be more respectful of others living around you, knowing that they'll be nicer in return (thus improving your quality of life)?

I think (and don't quote me on this) that most atheists are what they are because of a life changing experience (usually negative) that has changed them or their lives for the worse. People who believe in a God or some type of supernatural being believe that this wouldn't happen to them.
For example, during the Holocaust, many people became disillusioned after the horrific deaths they saw happening. Many claimed there "could be no God" after what they went through. Psychologically, I think it's just more of a mind over matter thing. They don't want to have to be tied down into believing something they have no faith in, and therefore, resot to atheism as a resort for the happiness they desired
I hope I helped

Well, I'm not a strict atheist but I certainly do not live my life by a set of vaguely written rules from over 2000 years ago. There might be a god up there but I don't think anyone is really getting his message straight and until he/she comes down and tells us mortals what the right thing to do is i'm going to do my own thing.

Atheist's believe in some thing. I think you're talking about an agnostic. I believe I am atheist. I believe in some thing, but I really don't know what. In a way I can be an agnostic. I can't really understand the "bible".
It's just a book with stories to me, it means nothing. In a way I am forced to believe there is a "God" I can't explain how this planet and everything in this universe was created I doubt anyone can neither. So I believe there is some sort of "God" but I don't know.

No. Atheists have lots of beliefs (just like Christians have lots of beliefs). Belief in a god just doesn't happen to be one of them.
From the Greek "atheos": a- = without, -theos = god.
"Atheist" simply refers to one's disbelief in the existence of god(s). It doesn't tell you ANYTHING else about that person, just as "Christian" doesn't tell you anything else about a person, except that he believes Jesus is a messiah.
Do YOU believe in Zeus, Odin, Krishna, Isis, or any of the other thousands of gods worshiped throughout history (most of them since before the Bible was written)? Atheists simply believe in ONE LESS god than you do. When you understand why YOU dismiss all of the other gods, you will understand why an atheist dismisses yours.

Atheists simply don't believe in any gods. Like you don't believe in any religion/god other than your own, we don't believe in them either and in addition we don't believe in yours. We just don't believe in any of them and don't believe there is a god out there in the first place. We believe that god is a man-made concept. It doesn't mean we don't believe in anything, we just don't believe in gods. Most atheists believe in science and accept the fact that we don't know everything and we don't feel the need fill every gap in our knowledge with "God did it". We simply admit that we haven't found an explanation for everything yet.

im personally not athiest, but have taken alot of religion/philosphy classes along with many cultural anthro classes mixed with religion, and it's not that they don't believe in "nothing" they just dn't believe in a higher being, and omnipotent, omnipresent being. they don't have to if that is one's choice than it should be respected just as one who doea believe in a higher being should be respected by an athiest.

atheist dont believe in god as defined in bibles/sacred texts. this doesnt exclude the possibility of something greater. but that entity is unlikely to be interested whether i go to church on sunday. the incongruities of most religions simply make them unbelievable

Atheists don't believe in God. They believe in other stuff, though. But, as a Christian, it's hard to imagine not believing in God.
