I witnessed a near drowning at a little girl's birthday party a few years ago. I'll never forget how "swan-like" she looked...sinking to the bottom of a 10 foot pool.
Don't think that a drowning person screams "HELP" and throws arms in the air...it's a silent-deadly tragedy.
Paramedics came after we administered CPR...the little girl is alive and well today.
I'm paranoid now though...everyone looks like they're drowning to me!

I was swimming with a friend in a river. We were pretty far out and my foot, then my leg, began to cramp, badly. I tried to ease out of the cramp, but couldn't, and began to sink. I struggled to remain afloat, but I was running out of strength and air. My friend tried to help, but all that happened was that I began to pull him down with me. I pulled myself away from him and let myself, and the air I could no longer hold on to, go. My eyes were open, and I watched very calmly as I sank away from the surface of the water toward the river bottom. I felt my self becoming lighter, and the water around me seemed to be starting to faintly glow...as if I were rising at the same time I was sinking. My back settled against the stones at river bottom and I felt myself still rising...
The next thing I knew, my friend's father was hauling me back up to the surface, and then up onto a large rock. I had a bad couple of minutes coughing and throwing up the water I'd swallowed and breathed, and then my friend and I rested for about ten minutes or so, then we carefully and slowly swam back to shore.
I remember thinking at the time that although the near-drowning was terrifying, the part of the experience that I thought was my approaching death was peaceful, once I had accepted it.
Since that time, although I've been scared at the possibility of dying and the pain of dying, the actual thought of death hasn't been scary.

No, but I have this morbid fear of drowning. It's so bad that if I have to cross a long bridge than spans deep water, someone else has to drive because I have to close my eyes and lie down in the seat to keep from having a panic attack. Now that's bad!

yea it was when i went camping one time with some friends of mine, we went for a swim in the river and i got caught up in the rapids, the water had such force, it was like pulling me down....it was a horrible feeling, some guy came out and rescued me lol i admit i liked that part, he was pretty cute......anyways, i vowed never to put myself in such a position again. it was the most horrible feeling, i really thought that there may of been a chance i'd die, gladly im still alive and breathing. =)
