Because today we finish paying off the money that U.S. and Canada charged us for making a token appearance in WW2. They also charged us interest. Why is there not a lot more publicity about this or would it offend Uncle Sam?

Not bullshit at all. What I've posted is fact and can easily be verified. Mastercard advert, hardly an original cliche. Was funny about ten years' ago.

I'm glad that this arrangement has been publicised at last. When the Americans say that they saved Britain in the Second World War, I say back that it was a merely commercial arrangement, where the American Government sent their young men to die in return for Britain buying the equipment that established America's lead in the sale of arms worldwide. And I wouldn't trust the impartiallity of a web site calling itself free anything!

Canada did not make a late appearance in WWII. They declared war on the same date the UK did. Also, Canada did not loan the UK money on lend-lease - they were full partners in the war from day one.

Between 1939 and 1945 the USA gave (without expectation of return) $30 billion of equipment and food to the UK to support the war effort both before and after its declaration of war in December 1941. At the end of the war the US stopped giving the goods to the UK but charged the UK about 10% of the cost of the goods in transit and extended $4.34 billion more as a loan to the UK to help with recovery from the war. It is that loan (at 2% interest) that the UK has just finished repaying.

Almost 435,000 young Americans died in that token appearance. And why should we not charge interest on the money we loaned you? Glad you repaid the debt it only took you 61 years. Now why don't you see what you can do with France to get them to repay the loans we made to them to rebuild that worthless country.

In fairness, the USA did more to win the war than Britain in terms of men & material...although I must admit I would have imagined that they would have let us out of these debts years ago (Heaven knows, they don't have a better lap dog).

Wow I had no clue about that information. That is interesting...I don't know if we should celebrate though. I guess I think that because there is sooo much debt in our country that it just doesn't seem important.
