each row has to have the numbers one through nine - none left out, none repeated, same for each column and each individual box.
Start with a puzzle rated easy so that you can work out a system, once you get the hang of it try the more challenging puzzles.
work each row, colum and box filling in the numbers that are obvious - you work by process of elimination, seeing what numbers are in the box and which ones you need in there- you know they wont go where there is that number in the row or column the square is in, in that box.
It is so much easier to demonstrate face to face than try to explain it. have you tried playing any online versions of sudoku? This might help a little:

this is a tutorial that explains with pics- not just instructions.
Hope this helps

To solve a Sudoku you must put numbers from 1 to 9 in some squares. The numbers are not allowed to be two time in a 3x3 square, a verticaly line or a horizontaly line. Got it?

I play this all the time, you are usually given 9 numbers and there are to be put in squares so the same number is no entered in the same box or list you would put like 1,2,3, in the first line, 4,5,6, in the next line and 7,8,9, in the next line, but when you go to do the next box do not put 1,2,or 3 in the first line as so on. same as when you go down. You can buy sudoku books like crossword books and they will give you instructions. Good Luck.
