Assuming you are typing with all the fingers in the way that typists are taught, and assuming you are typing something non-technical in English, about 56% of the typing is done with the left hand.

While you could probably find statistics on this somewhere you can make a general hypothesis by observing what letters your left hand actually hits. Vowels are very common in almost every word, and your left hand has access to only two of them, 'a' and 'e'. On top of that, you have uncommon letters like 'q' 'w' 'z' 'x', and 'v' that are also on the left side of the keyboard which would make it seem like your left hand would probably do a little bit less typing than the right side.

Here's an interesting tid-bit. The qwerty layout we all use today was actually designed to slow down a typist.

Based on e being the most frequently used letter in the English alphabet, it's quite probable that it's more than 50%.

As some side trivia, did you know that one of the longest words to type using only the left hand (and proper touch typing techniques) is stewardess? I don't know what source to cite though.

This would be easy to do with a script that goes through a text, and tabulates the most frequently used letters. Just add up the sum of the left hand letters (qwertasdfgzxcvb) and compare to that of the right hand letters.

the keyboard was layed out as it is to hopefully balance the use of the two hands and to use the strongest fingers for the most used letters.
