I got the set of books from Exam Prep before I got certified back in 2000. They are very thorough and have practice tests you can take which do a very good job of approximating the kinds of quesitons asked on the tests.

Go to your local adult school, enroll in a computer repair A+ class, and but the book from the book store. I recently threw a 4 year old copy away (it seems almost everybody I talk to was A+ certified, good luck in finding work)!

I concur with the spelling course first....

After that, forget trying to gain a credential by reading a book. Take a qualified course, and then get tested. You will learn real-world scenarios that a book will never teach you. You are worthless to the corporate environment with a certification that you were able to pass by reading the crib notes that others wrote who passed the test.

Depending on where you live look at some local ROP programs or perhaps you local community college. You might be able to get the state to pay for your education if you live in the states.

Learn to spell/read then go buy CompTIA's A+ Certification book. Sold at bookstores and CompUSA.
