I recently installed a new CD/DVD in my desktop connected up the ide and power but i noticed that a previously installed CD-ROM drive also had a wire running from the player directly to the sound card. What is the reason for this wire when the sound still works on the new player without this wire?

If you wanted to play an audio CD through the CD player this cable was required. Most moder CD players, and Applications like windows Media player in XP do not require this cable anymore.

Problems reading and writing CDs are common. In many cases, the problem can be solved by checking the PC with free software, hardware modifications and cleaning the CD drive. I found the information at http://fixit.in/cdrdrive.html useful

That cable is obsolete for EVERY reason in newer hardware. The audio data is sent on the PCI bus. Wave files are as digital as MP3 , the difference is compression. Throw the stupid wire away.
