I'm referring to a big earthquake. What happens if everything shuts down?? Banks, gas station, grocery stores close down.

Stockpile of canned and other non-perishables
Can opener ;)
Propane stove and pan
blankets, sleeping bag
flashlight and batteries
first-aid kit
toilet paper and sanitary products (I'm a girl)
Stockpiles of water (enough for 5 people for a week, since I know I need to have some for my neighbors who don't plan!)
5 gallons of gasoline (for my car)
Cat food and cat carrier for my furry 'child'
tent
matches
eating utensils and plates, glasses
drug prescriptions for two weeks
$100 in small bills (for bartering)

Some of these items I keep in my car trunk...others in my backyard...others in a friend's backyard...I should be OK no matter if we also flood (I live by beach) or if the building falls on my car.

Have I forgotten anything?

...people prepare for earthquakes?

I guess, don't leave any leaning tower of pizas made of papers or expensive china sitting around.

seriously, I've lived in california for just over 10 years and i've never done any weird bomb shelter stuff in preparation for an earthquake.

I just keep a little extra water handy, a first aid kit, candles, batteries, portable radio, and a flash light. There's really not much more you can do.

I've lived here all my life and I have never felt one. I live in the Central Valley.
