i.e. not the Dalai Lama and the royalty and all the monks in the monasteries, but all the regular, workaday Tibetans? What was their life like? were their patterns of life similar to other rural Chinese at the time? (agricultural lands, villages, merchants, etc) Did they have guards to enforce their borders?

It was probably some what similar to the chines yes. Tibet's a large country so it would have varied abit to which part. most Tibetans are Buddhist so part of there day would be taken up by prayer although there are other religions there also. there society was very enclosed and didn't let many outsiders in. they had a limited army and boarder guards force. due to the size of there country and the unrest in parts it would have been near impossible to protect all the borders.

After the chines invasion life would have changed a bit with the influx of chines workers, and the modernization of Tibet.
