In case you want a cool learning tool, when learning polyatomic ions I would suggest learning either the -ite or the -ate form plus the charge of the family of ions (always the same).

Then learn the families that have hypo- and per- (think hyper- which means 'more').

For example, -ates always have one more O than -ites. Hypo- prefix means one less O than -ites and per- prefix means one more O.

Ex: perchlorate (ClO4)-1, chlorate (ClO3)-1, chlorite (ClO2)-1, hypochlorite (ClO)-1.

Most poly-ions only have the -ite and -ate forms, so you really don't end up needing to memorize so many.
