If you are watching calories, then bagel with cream cheese is better than muffins with jelly. If you are not watching calories, then I would add a few things. I would toast the muffins and then use real butter and then add the jelly. The saltiness of the butter with the sweet of the jelly is a wonderful combination. I prefer pineapple, but concord grape is really good as well. For the bagel, again heated, and then real butter and then the cream cheese, which again, combines the saltiness of the butter with the smoothness of the cream cheese. My personal favorite, bagels, toasted, with real butter and then cream cheese. This is the worst as far as calories go, but to me, tastes the absolute best. As Julia Child said, "There is no substitute for real butter." You be the judge.

Once a friend made me incredibly good Bagels,with Cream cheese and strawberry preserves. Heated slightly in the microwave after toasting the Bagel.
On English muffins just plain margarine or butter is fine..toast-darker for better flavor.

Bagels with cream cheese, and NO JELLY on them. And you have to get the bagels in New Jersey, (really best bagels, it's a fact.) Don't keep the bagels in a plastic bag and DON'T get them in Dunkin Donuts.
