It will if you use it on that 256 Ram. Max out your Ram to 512 or higher if you can so that Windows XP will run better. I didn't bother & wish I had. I waited almost a year after installing XP to max out my Ram to 512. Wow, what a difference!
Also make sure to clear your temporary files, clear your java cache & delete any programs and files that you no longer use & need. Run the defragmenter weekly & make sure your virus scan is up to date. Windows Defender is 100% free & one of the best around. It updates almost daily on its own & has found other spy/adware that McAfee, Norton, PCCillian & others left unfound.

Actually the other people are wrong with your processor speed on Windows XP. A pentium 3 1.11Ghz will run it pretty good. But your Ram is an Issue 256mb is bare min these days. and your harddisk is probably a 5400RPM which will be another bottleneck.. Just stick in more memory like 512mb total and buy another HDD thats 7200 rpm with 8mb cache and you will be fine. You could run it at OK speed for what you got now. My brother is running his windows XP on a 800MHz pentium 3 (Coppermine core) and 768mb ram and a 80gb 8mb cache 7200 RPM drive and it works just fine. and I used to use XP on a 450Mhz AMD k6-2 and thats way worse then what you got.

.
• PC with 300 megahertz or higher processor clock speed recommended; 233 MHz minimum required (single or dual processor system);* Intel Pentium/Celeron family, or AMD K6/Athlon/Duron family, or compatible processor recommended
• 128 megabytes (MB) of RAM or higher recommended (64 MB minimum supported; may limit performance and some features)
• 1.5 gigabytes (GB) of available hard disk space*
• Super VGA (800 x 600) or higher-resolution video adapter and monitor
• CD-ROM or DVD drive
• Keyboard and Microsoft Mouse or compatible pointing device
The Above is the system configuration that is required to install win xp. If you have then you can install it.

Hi,
I have seen systems with XP on them like yours. Yes it will be slower than Windows 98. But!!! Big But..... You need to upgrade your memory to 512 at the least...1G if you can. This should speed up Window XP on a P3 alot and will run better than Windows 98se.
I have worked on Celrons with 128Meg of ram with XP on them and adding memory helps alot.

You have plenty of memory and speed on your computer to handle XP. Matter of fact your computer is faster then mine. I have a 900mhz processer and use XP with it. I also have 360 Mb of memory to assist with the speed problem. If for some reason you have problems with the speed of your computer try increasing the memory. Purchase 2 - 235 Mb memory chips - that will insure you have plenty of memory and great speed in using your computer

No.system speed and the operating system you use are two entirely different scenarios. win xp is always a better operating system than all other versions and hence faster too. if you are able to install win xp on your( you will be able) then take for granted that it works faster than other os.
if it is not then what is the point in developing new os?????????

Definetly it will slow down. I am having windows xp in AMD PC which is PIII 1GHZ speed with 512 MB SDRAM which is fast and performance is nice. So you better increase the RAM of your PC. It will help to make it work faster.

Compare to previous version of windows, yes. Cuz WinXP need higher spec and run more files and drivers than the older version of windows. But anyway, P3 with let say 512MB of RAM will be enough to run on normal basis, for gaming purpose, you better upgrade your hardware.
