People would like to believe it is low self esteem and so on so forth, putting an emphases on the fact that the abuser is insecure in some way. In actuality, it is usually because the person being bullied is seen to be unacceptable and not worthy of respect by their peers. The only way to fight it is to earn the respect of your peers by standing up for yourself and not taking crap from them. Find something to make fun of them about, everyone is self concieous (I can't spell, sue me)about some physical feature about themselves. The key is to identify it on the fly and exploit it! Fight them with their own medicine! If you let them bully you they will continue to do so because they have no respect for you. Isn't American culture awesome.

Insecurity. They focus on others obvious problems so others won't notice theirs. Only insecure people belittle others. It is a common reaction. When little kids fight you notice they don't just listen to what others call them they taunt back with their own name calling. Same thing with adults or teens! Pathetic really.

Fear. It all comes down to one fear or another.
They are afaid of the person they bully.
They are afraid of someone else and need to 'prove' to themselves they are strong.
They are attracted to this person, sexually or otherwise, and are afraid of those feelings.

It's all fear of one breed or another.
