Restaurants:
1) South Beach Bar 7 Grill, for Grilled Maji tacos! The best in the world. This is on Newport Avenue in Ocean Beach. Warning: it's a bar and no kids are allowed, even accompanied by adults.
2) C Level Lounge, on Harbor Island. FANTASTIC food, wonderful view of downtown, even though it's across the water from downtown.
3) Celadon Thai restaurant in Hillcrest, a wonderful eclectic part of town
Places:
1) Torry Pines Park north of La Jolla. Wonderful walking trails, views, and close to La Jolla where you can enjoy a nice walk in a less-off-the-beaten-path place
2) Mt Palomar Observatory
3) Wild Animal Park, much better than the zoo, which is pretty fantastic itself
4) Cabrillo National monument, at the end of Catalina on Pt. Loma
5) This is not off the beaten path, but I love it: the Hotel Del Coronado on Coronado Island. The bottom floor is a museum. Really interesting.

There are wonderful hikes at Torrey Pines, beaches in Solana Beach, and restaurants in Hillcrest. If you like deserts and are in the area in the spring check out Anza Borrego State Park and if you like apple pie you have got to take a drive to Julian. Quail Botanical Gardens in Encinitas is beautiful, the meditation gardens at Self Realization are wonderful as well...
Oh my goodness...there is so much...I hope you have a wonderful time in San Diego!!
