Oobily: That is my guess, unfortunately, they appear to be happy to do so with weapons with world wide ramifications. Most or all of the rest of the world would just assume they give in...

So, I guess they are looking for respect by disrespecting authority. Childish maybe. Of course, they might be a little indignant at the fact that they aren't even in a dialog with the US...

Whether Iran is attempting to create nuclear weapons is not our business, is it? Stay out of it! The U.S. has nuclear weapons - does that mean other nations should attack us?

The hypocrisy is unbelievable.

They think of themselves as a historical power. Posessing nuclear power is a prerequisite to becoming a global power. Some of the arguments used by the Bush Administration lack thought: Iran does not have a need for nuclear power because they have oil-perhaps they want to sell the oil to others and use nuclear for themselves. Of course, the huge power vaccuum in the Middle East is being filled by the Iranians. They don't have to create nuclear weapons, just give the technology to others.

Iran is playing the U.S. and Russia with considerable success. Iran remains on the world's stage by provoking fights with other countries. It also lets off a little domestic steam. Iran doesn't even need to actually attempt to gain the technology, it only has to convince the U.S. and Europe it wants to.

Isn't it obvious? With Saudi Arabia losing much of its influence, Israel caught up in war, Iraq in civil war and occupation, and Afghanistan in occupation, Iran and Syria have the opportunity to whip up support and become a powerhouse in the area. Iraqs new government is a threat to thier superiority(atleast militarily and influencially). By building nuclear weapons and spitting in the face of the US... Iran creates a name for itself and gains the respect of the middle eastern people. They have long been attacked (ie. the crusades, wwII, russia, US... blah blah). Islam was created in response to Christian faith being imposed on them... thats why the angel Gabriel was used by Muhammed. Jews, christians, muslims... we all have the same origins in belief. Now they are doing what they did when they created Islam.. they want thier own identity. They want to be independent and have national pride... as we all do. The Iranian president is playing these emotions against the middle eastern ppl in hopes to gain power.... it is greed... that's my final answer!

open water... hunny u are very pationate in ur views but... I just want u to know that the last time our country became isolationist Hitler rose to power... Im sorry but Iran would be dangerous with nuclear weapons... very dangerous as they might actually use them. We used them.. but in a time of desperation and before we fully understood what we were doing!

they are trying to gain a nuke so they can use it on Israel or the USA. the people who think it's OK for some country like Iran or North Korea to have nukes just because we do are completely whacked. the US would not use a nuke on another country "just because we have one" but when you have insane leaders like Iran and N. Korea the free world can't afford to let them have a nuke.
it's true the US dropped 2 nukes on Japan but remember we warned them and it ended a war that we were drug into when THEY ATTACKED US and because we did YOU and i have the right AND freedom to say what we think about our leaders. i get the willies when i think about what the US would be like if Germany or Japan had gotten a nuke before us and i shiver to think about Iran or N. Korea or some terrorist group getting a nuke and setting it off in downtown USA
