I have a 1/2" hammer drill and I need to install shelving that requires a 3/16" drill bit (according to the instructions). Do I need to buy a new drill or do I just buy the bit and attach it somehow?

yes you can use a variety of drill bits with this drill.the 1/2 in. pertains to the size of the drive.as stated earlier, turn the switch off of hammer position and use as a drill.the hammer feature is used for drilling thru concrete and stone. i use my 1/2 in. drill for holes of a 1/4 in. and more .then use the same drill with a screw bit to fasten the material that i just drilled.
good luck,you'll do fine

The 1/2" part of your hammer drill is refering to the largest shank (part of the bit that goes in the drill) that will fit in the end of the drill. You use a drill bit all the way down to about the size of a sewing needle in your drill.

yes drills have interchangeable bits. actually, drills don't have bits until you put one in them. the 1/2" on your drill means it will accept a bit up to half inch in diameter. also, hammer drills are for drilling concrete. you can use it to drill wood with a normal bit, but it will vibrate and be very noisy. (a 1/2" hammer drill might be a bit much for what you plan on doing)

A hammer drill is over kill. you can use it , but be sure the hammer part setting is off. .... go buy a box of bits at the home depot or ace for about $5-10 bucks. A hammer drill is used for drilling in to hard items like cement. You may want to get a 12v for around the house drilling. --- you attach the bit by looseing the "chuck in front of the drill the retightening it with the key (if its a model that needs one).
